Irrigation System Finds Use For Hockey Puck

Lake Region REC located in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota covers 3200 square miles and has 5600 miles of line situated in the heart of Minnesota lake country. Recently LREC worked with TSTM to provide a solution to power an Aclara demand response unit (DRU) in a series of irrigation systems. The irrigation system that Lake Region was tasked to work with had needed DRU control at the pivot control panel which included a variety of automatic starting equipment and other systems but  lacked a neutral to connect with the Aclara DRU unit. The panel only used 480 volts line to line for the installation.  With the help of a specially designed auxiliary power auto transformer called a Hockey Puck by TSTM, Lake Region was able to connect the DRU line to line at 480 volts. “TSTM developed a Hockey Puck auto transformer that carries a larger VA rating of 300VA which provided the DRU with adequate signaling strength” said Ed Jenson, VP Engineering/Operations of Lake Region. Jenson went on to comment, “we had about 500 of these particular installations and it was imperative that we develop a solution to provide a power option for the DRU, and the Hockey Puck from TSTM was a great solution.” The TSTM Hockey Puck protects the endpoint from transients that are common in these applications, thus reducing the cost of replacing endpoints. VT PACK MOUNTS INSIDE OR OUTSIDE!

The popular VT Pack can be mounted inside a transformer cabinet, meter socket or attached on the outside  using a variety  of applications. One popular method is using a Connector Cover  . Used in conjunction with a dab of gorilla glue this application is water tight and secure.  If you’ve not yet switched to a TSTM Socket  and need to mount the VT Pack through a knock-out our Connector Kit will provide you the security and water tight fit you need.

TSTM DEVELOPS NEW AUXILIARY TRANSFORMER!

At the request of several utility customer TSTM developed a 2:1 auxiliary transformer that carries a very robust  300 VA Rating which protects and powers a variety of endpoints, under glass transmitters,  and other electronic equipment. View a description and picture of the product 4824 AUX 300.

METER ADAPTERS PROVIDE POWER FOR AMR ENDPOINTS IN ARIZONA! 

Sulphur Springs Valley Electric in Willcox, Arizona is in the final stages of installing the L&G/Hunt AMR system on 52,000 meters. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2013. During the installation process Sulphur Springs has deployed the 12S meter adapter by TSTM to power the TS1 endpoints on all of the 12S 480V 3 wire delta applications.

Scott Sindel, Metering Foreman with 23 years of experience, enjoys the reliability, ease of installation, and safety that the 12S 480:240 adapter provides. “The adapter comes pre-wired and is basically plug-and-play for us to power the TS1 endpoint, and it reduces the endpoint voltage from 480V to 240V, making it a much safer installation. The toroidal transformer housed in the bottom of the adapter is very reliable and we’ve experienced no failures since installation began.”

With 4000 miles of line spread over southeastern Arizona, many of Sulphur Springs meters are in remote areas and reliability is a key. Reducing lost or malfunctioning meters is a key to keeping costs down and revenue flowing through the meter. Sindel comments that “reducing man hours chasing down meters at the edge of our territory that aren’t reading properly saves us money in two ways. It reduces labor and the meter is operating efficiently and effectively providing revenue that would otherwise be lost or in dispute.” Meter adapters provided by TSTM offer all of the reliability, ease of installation and safety that Sulphur Springs Valley Electric was looking for.

   INCORRECT VT PACK WIRING? 

If you are grounding the neutral on your VT Pack wiring harness at the socket, did you know you are incorrectly wiring the VT Pack and voiding the warranty? Multiple grounds in the meter cabinet create conditions for the VT Pack to potentially fail.  Proper operation of the VT Pack requires single point grounding. COLORADO SPRINGS UTILITIES & TSTM

    Colorado Springs Utilities was experiencing significant failures of their 480
     volt metering installations and contacted TSTM to inquire about possible
     solutions that they might be able to provide.
 
    “Too many of our 480/277V 4-wire grounded wye metering applications
     were failing at the Test Switches, and in many cases lightning surges and
     dust contamination were suspected.  With TSTM’s help, we drafted a
     wiring diagram that incorporated our wire code and assured the usage of
     single point grounding for protection of our metering equipment.  Utilizing
     TSTM’s VT Pack™, lightning induced transients are now safely diverted   
     away from the metering equipment to ground.
 
    “The result?  In the past 4 years we have purchased and installed over 400
     of the TSTM 2.5:1 VT Packs and have had no failures or warranty
     claims.  Stopping lightning induced metering failures has not only eliminated
     the cost of replacing metering equipment and the associated labor, but,
     more importantly, has preserved the integrity of our consumer’s billing
     information.  The ease of installation and the enhanced safety for our
     employees and the public are added significant benefits of using the VT
     Pack.

Education: Technical Institute Graduate in Automotive Studies
30 plus years of experience in the parts industry in heavy equipment, outdoor power equipment and automotive industry.
Jeff has been involved in a variety of community activities but is most proud of is 20 years of leadership positions held with the Boy Scouts. He helped start a troop that has seen 30 young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout including his son, Jeremy. Jeff enjoys working on hobbies in his garage, and spending time with 2 grandchildren. His latest adventure is a mobile DJ business that provides entertainment to a variety of events in the area.
Testing product, packaging, receiving inventory, shipment of product and orders, are all duties Jeff handles with speed and efficiency. Before your order leaves our building Jeff has probably had a hand in making sure it is done right. Jeff continues to be excited about learning the electrical metering industry and working with a variety of customers that TSTM enjoys.

    Measurement Canada Approves TSTM VT Pack

    Measurement Canada recently approved the TSTM 3:1 VT Pack for use in Canada. This VT Pack can be used for 600/347 4-wire wye applications where traditional 3:1 voltage transformers are used. The VT Pack is compatible with AMI/AMR systems, is quicker and easier to install than traditional voltage transformers, and carries a full 10 year warranty.     TSTM SIGNS CONTRACT WITH FORTISALBERTA
     
    TSTM has signed a contract with FortisAlberta to provide 2200 meter adapters and auxiliary transformers that will be combined with the Landis and Gyr S4 meter to provide a safe, reduced voltage metering package. A unique toroidal autotransformer is housed in the adapter body and connected to the meter to provide for a safer reduced voltage for the under-glass endpoint. FortisAlberta serves 175 communities and 463,000 customers in central and southern Alberta, Canada.     Single Point Grounding
    Single point grounding on the metering voltage circuits is essential for the reliable operation of the VT Pack™ when the service is subjected to destructive transients. What this means is that there should be one and only one ground on the common (white on the standard harness). For 4-wire grounded wye, 4-wire delta and 3-wire corner grounded delta applications, we recommend that this single ground be made on the primary common*, which usually is the same as the grounded neutral. The common wire that usually goes to the meter should NOT be grounded in the socket in addition to the ground on the primary neutral. The use of multiple grounds on the VT Pack wiring circuit will automatically void the warranty!
